Games in Orbit‘s review score guide
At Games in Orbit, we try our best to give games fair and justified scores that reflect the contents of the review; that way, people who don’t have the time to read the whole article can still be well-informed on the quality of a specific game.
We use a 20-point scoring system from 0.5 to 10, including .5 decimals. We believe this system achieves a nice balance of contrast and clarity, while a 10-point system doesn’t allow for enough differentiation between games and a 100-point system is too granular.

10 – Masterpiece
Very few games are worthy of this title. They have to offer an experience as close to flawless as possible, as well as exciting innovations or features. For most developers, this is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. Examples include:
- Return of the Obra Dinn
- Celeste
- Super Mario Odyssey

9.5 – Excellent
We passionately recommend that you play these games. They are very close to being masterpieces, but there is something in them that prevents them from getting there. That can be a slight story mishap, a lack of quality of life features, bad performance, or simply a lack of ambition, among other possibilities. Examples include:
- Stardew Valley
- Dead Cells
- Gorogoa

8 to 9 – Great
These games’ quality far outweighs their faults, but those are still noticeable and relevant. If you enjoy the game’s genre, we can almost assure you that getting one of these will guarantee a great time. Examples include:
- Cuphead
- Super Meat Boy
- Subnautica

6.5 to 7.5 – Good
These games could be a lot better, but they would still be a safe choice if you are a fan of the genre. Examples include:
- The Evil Within 2
- Pikuniku
- 60 Parsecs!

5 to 6 – Mediocre
We still think these games have more good than bad in them, but we would recommend that you approach them carefully and do some further research before buying them. Examples include:
- Need for Speed Payback
- Clustertruck
- Broforce

3.5 to 4.5 – Bad
The enjoyment of these games will depend greatly on a multitude of aspects that would otherwise frustrate or disappoint most people. Examples include:
- Life is Strange 2: Episode 1
- Desert Child
- Calico

2 to 3 – Awful
There is very little value in these titles, and only the smallest of crowds would find enjoyment in them. We do not recommend that you buy these games unless you are fully aware of what you are getting yourself into. Examples include:
- Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back
- We Happy Few
- Anamorphine

0.5 to 1.5 – Painful
These are some of the worst games ever created. Sometimes, they are so hilariously bad it’s worth giving it a look, but generally, we would advise you to steer clear of any product this atrocious. It is the rarest tier of scores in our system. Examples include:
- Vroom in the Night Sky
- The Quiet Man
- Balan Wonderworld
